PROGRAMS FOR VISITORS WITH DISABILITIES 

For Visitors Who Are Blind or Partially Sighted

In Touch with Ancient Egypt

This program is a touch tour consisting of six ancient Egyptian sculptures. Visitors who are blind or partially sighted are invited to touch these sculptures of pharaohs, gods, and goddesses. Visitors may take the tour independently or may request a guide for individual and group touch tours free of charge. A recorded Audio Guide with information about the sculptures is available at the Audio Guide desk in the Great Hall. A large-print booklet with descriptions and locations of the sculptures can be obtained at the Information Desk in the Great Hall. This information is also available in Braille and Braille labels identify the sculptures in the galleries.

Touch Collection

Handling sessions are available by request, using objects from the Touch Collection. The collection comprises a wide range of art from the Museum's permanent collection, supplemented by casts and high-quality reproductions. It is available for use by visitors of all ages who are blind or partially sighted, as individuals or in groups.

Verbal Imaging Tours

These highly descriptive tours are designed for visitors who are blind or partially sighted. These tours of the permanent collection and special exhibitions are available by request.

Picture This! Workshops for Adults Who Are Blind or Partially Sighted

Workshops involve Verbal Imaging tours and handling sessions. These events, scheduled once a month, are listed in the Touch and Explore brochure. Download the program schedule (PDF). Art & The Alphabet: A Tactile Experience

This children's book combines color reproductions, large print, Braille, and tactile pictures. It introduces masterpieces from the Museum's permanent collection, to be shared with families, friends, and teachers. Although the book is currently out of print, teachers may borrow a copy from the Nolen Library and Teacher Resource Center in the Ruth and Harold D. Uris Center for Education at the Museum.

Service Animals

Service animals are welcome in the Museum.

Large-Print Labels

Large-print labels may be found in dispensers at the entrances of selected special exhibitions.

Audio Guides

Audio Guides are available for student groups who visit the Museum. Fees are waived for all New York City middle and high school students and for groups with individuals who are hard of hearing, Deaf, blind, or partially sighted.
